Extraction of REEs from Blast Furnace Slag by Gluconobacter oxydans

چکیده

Granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) is a potential resource of rare earth elements (REEs), and due to the complex mineralogy, extraction by conventional hydrometallurgical process makes it an acid-consuming method. Bioleaching thus investigated using chemo-organotrophic bacterium Gluconobacter oxydans (DSMZ 46616) for REE from GGBFS containing 157 ppm Ce, 90 La, 71 Nd 40 Er, hosted in Ca-Al-Si matrix. The gluconic acid generation G. was assessed its role GGBFS. With 5% (w/v) mixture non-adapted GGBFS-adapted culture, maximum solubilization 67% 88% observed after 12 days incubation, respectively. total amount excreted bacteria increased with leaching duration, which contributed rise metal extraction. Scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive analysis (SEM-EDAX) solid residue showed bacterial cells corrosion pits, thereby assisting solubilization.

Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag

1. Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) is a by product of the steel industry. Blast furnace slag is defined as “the non-metallic product consisting essentially of calcium silicates and other bases that is developed in a molten condition simultaneously with iron in a blast furnace.” [1] In the production of iron, blast furnaces are loaded with iron o...

The Study of Ion Adsorption by Amorphous Blast Furnace Slag

In this study, the blast furnace slag was used as absorbing bed and then, its ionic adsorption was studied. For this reason, various experimental parameters such as pH, contact time and the primary ion concentration were investigated. The remaining concentrations of ions such as; Mn2+ and Fe2+ in water were measured by atomic adsorption spectroscopy. The chemical and p...

Ceramics from blast furnace slag, kaolin and quartz

Three new ceramic batches with no traditional fluxes and 30, 50 and 70 wt.% blast furnace slag were studied. The processes of phase formation and densification were estimated in non-isothermal conditions by differential thermal analysis and dilatometry, respectively. After that the degrees of sintering, obtained after heat-treatment at different temperatures and times, were evaluated measuring ...

Gluconobacter oxydans: its biotechnological applications.

Gluconobacter oxydans is a gram-negative bacterium belonging to the family Acetobacteraceae. G. oxydans is an obligate aerobe, having a respiratory type of metabolism using oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. Gluconobacter strains flourish in sugary niches e.g. ripe grapes, apples, dates, garden soil, baker's soil, honeybees, fruit, cider, beer, wine. Gluconobacter strains are non-pathoge...
